New General Manager Appointed!
2nd September 2009

Last month we advised in our newsletter that Bronwyn was leaving us and being replaced by George Kenton. Unfortunately George subsequently advised us that he would not be taking up the position.

However, perhaps things weren’t meant to be, because we are pleased to announce that we have found a real gem!  The Crown Hotel would like to announce the appointment of Michele Cole, who will be joining us as General Manager on the 2nd November.

Michele will bring her experience, drive for results and strategic focus from her previous positions that she has held within the hotel industry.  She joins us from her current position within IHG (Intercontinental Hotel Group) in Wellington.  Prior to this Michele has had management experience in Sales & Marketing in hotels in Sydney (IHG & Starwood) and the Cook Islands and 10 years with Singapore Airlines Auckland.   Michele and her husband Shane have a strong passion for Hawke’s Bay, being frequent visitors as well as property owners.

Michele is excited about the opportunity that The Crown Hotel represents for her.  She is keen to use her skills and experience to build on the reputation that Bronwyn and The Crown team have built up over the last three years.

In the meantime, Phoebe Wheller, one of The Crown’s key staff members, has been appointed Assistant Manager and is responsible for the day to day operation of the Hotel.  She is being supported by Acting Manager Sean Burns, owner of Milk and Honey.   Sean is very experienced in the hospitality industry and together with Phoebe will ensure that, until Michele’s arrival, it will be business as usual.

Napier pub transformed into prize winner
25 September 2007

The restoration of a "beaten-up" old pub has won the top prize in this year's art deco awards in Napier.

The Crown Hotel in Ahuriri has been transformed into a five-star accommodation and conference venue, retaining most of its original art deco character.

The Art Deco Trust's citation for the hotel's supreme award said that "after many decades as one of the pubs at the port, the Crown Hotel has emerged like the proverbial butterfly from a chrysalis, dragging its environs up with it and enhancing Ahuriri as an ever more attractive tourist destination".

The award is the third major recognition this year for the revamped hotel.  In April it received a five star rating from Qualmark, the first self contained and serviced accommodation in Napier to achieve this level.  And in July the hotel won the regional Tourism and Leisure Award at the Registered Master Builders PlaceMakers 2007 House of the Year Awards for its refurbishment and development.

General Manager, Bronwyn Jesney, said the restoration had taken 18 months.  "It was fairly beaten up, it was a mariners pub," she said.  The hotel reopened late last year and has 27 rooms and conference facilities.
